$9 Million Stop-Smoking Federal Grant Headed to Wisconsin

Congratulations to co-PI's Michael Fiore, MD and Timothy Baker, PhD the director and associate director of the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (UW-CTRI) recently received a new $9-million federal grant to discover the best ways to help people successfully stop smoking. The grant funded by NIH is entitled: "Engineering Effective Interventions for Tobacco Use: A Translational Laboratory". The goal of this grant is to create the greatest likelihood for smokers to successfully overcome tobacco addiction.

Congratulations to William Busse, MD, Professor and Chair for the Department of Medicine for the renewal of his NIH contract entitled: "Inner City Asthma Consortium (ICAC)."

Congratulations to Christopher Crnich, MD, assistant Professor in Infectious Disease on being awarded an ICTR Type 2 pilot award for his proposal entitled "Pilot Study of the Veterans Administration MRSA Initiative in a Milwaukee Community Living Center."

Congratulations to Marc Drezner, MD Director for the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) and Section Head, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. He recently received a Director's Award for his years of research on his grant titled: "Pathogenesis of vitamin D Refractory Diseases" which is in it's 28th year of funding!


Congratulations to Karen Hansen, MD in the Section of Rheumatology for her first R01 being funded. Her new grant is titled: "Treatment of Vitamin D Insufficiency." The overall hypothesis is to evaluate the effect of vitamin D therapy on the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
