Clinical and Research Interests
I perform basic and clinical research on immunologically mediated lung diseases. Disorders of interest include interstitial lung disease (sarcoidosis, idiopathic interstitial pneumonias and disorders associated with systemic autoimmune disorders (collagen vascular disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus). Another area of interest is inflammatory airway diseases including bronchiectasis associated with cystic fibrosis, idiopathic bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. I also perform basic and clinical research on lung transplantation and am the Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program at the University of Wisconsin. Additional areas of research and expertise include the effects of aging on lung structure and function, community and hospital-acquired lower respiratory tract infections and asthma. Current research in my laboratory focuses on the role of annexin I and its degradation in lung inflammation, regulation of arachidonic acid generation in the inflamed lung and mechanisms of immune tolerance in lung transplantation. An additional area of expertise is the role of neutrophils and neutrophil-derived proteases in lung disease.
Other Interests:
Mouse model of berylliosis; all aspects of lung transplantation; vascular endothelial growth factor and the lung; biofilms and chronic lung infection; ventilator-associated pneumonia; alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency; care of the adult patient with cystic fibrosis.Search for Keith Meyer's literature abstracts on PubMed
