Biography
Patrick McBride received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin and a master's degree in public health from the University of South Carolina. He completed his residency in family practice at the University of South Carolina. Dr. McBride is a professor in both the departments of medicine and family medicine, and is the Associate Dean for Students.
McBride's activities encompass the three broad areas of academic medicine: education, research and clinical care. He has served on several national advisory boards including the National Cholesterol Education Program's Children and Adolescent Expert Panel and NCEP's Adult Treatment Panel III and IV expert panels, among many others. He serves as a scientific advisory board member of the UW Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention, and is the co-director of the School of Medicine's clinical nutrition course.
McBride is the recipient of 12 local and national teaching awards, including a prestigious Distinguished Education Award from the University of Wisconsin for the year 2000 and Distinguished Alumni Awards from the University of South Carolina in 2003 and 2008. He has previously received statewide and national honors as the Family Physician Educator of the Year and lifetime membership in the UW Teaching Academy. He recently received the Department of Medicine’s Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Award.
Dr. McBride received a prestigious NIH Preventive Cardiology Academic Award to develop a comprehensive preventive cardiology curriculum and clinical program for the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. McBride has integrated and sustained this curriculum throughout the training of health professionals including students, residents, and fellows in many specialties. McBride was the principal investigator on 2 other NIH grants to develop an innovative nutrition curriculum for health professionals and to increase the quality of preventive services in primary care.
McBride helped develop a comprehensive clinical preventive cardiology program with more than 20 professional staff. The program includes inpatient and outpatient cardiac rehabilitation, a busy preventive cardiology/cholesterol clinic (one of the first in the U.S.), a stress management program and many other clinical initiatives for people at risk for cardiovascular disease.
McBride is a leader in developing and implementing statewide teaching programs on cardiovascular risk factors for physicians, nurses, dietitians and physician's assistants. He is an investigator on several NIH grants, including the Women's Health Initiative Trial, a study of cardiovascular disease in people with Type I diabetes, and the effects of smoking cessation on vascular disease. His primary areas of research are in preventive cardiology, risk factors and the quality of cardiovascular disease prevention in practice. He has over 100 publications on heart disease and prevention.
