RESEARCH
My research focus is on understanding the learning process and barriers to learning in diverse populations, especially those influenced by gender. Specifically, I am interested in self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is found to be one of the most important factors in career selection and persistence, especially among underrepresented minorities and women, yet it has been only recently recognized as an important variable in the career development of physicians pursing biomedical careers.

PROJECTS
Gender and Race in Biomedical Research Self-efficacy
The goal of the proposed work is to expand our previous studies on gender differences in biomedical research self-efficacy and extend them to an African American population of biomedical researchers. Furthermore, we wish to test an intervention aimed at increasing biomedical research self-efficacy in women. Role: Principal Investigator

Clinical Investigator Preparatory Program
This program provides a didadic curriculum combined with mentoring and research experiences to train physicians and other health care professionals to be clinical researchers. Role: Program Administrator.

Mentored Clinical Research Scholar Program Award
The purpose of the Clinical Research Scholar (CRS) Program is to provide financial support for junior faculty who wish to participate in the UW-Madison Clinical Investigator Preparatory Program (K30) and assure them protected time to conduct mentored clinical research. Role: Co-Investigator and Co-Director

Training & Education to Advance Multidisciplinary Clinical Research
The goal of this program is to establish and validate methods for training a workforce to carry out the nation's clinical agenda as put forth in the NIH Roadmap. Role: Director of Evaluation

General Clinical Research Center
The goal of the General Clinical Research Center is to provide clinical research infrastructure for medical scientists who conduct patient-oriented research. Role: Assistant Program Director Educational program

PROJECT AFFLIATIATIONS
Academic Clinical Oncologist Training Program
This program is linked with the Clinical Investigator Preparatory Program to train physician investigators for academic careers in clinical oncology research. Role: Advisor

Initiating Airway Remodeling in Asthma by Allergen
This award provides an excellent opportunity for training of junior clinical investigators in the principals of patient-oriented research and prepares them for an independent, successful research career. Role: Consultant

Clinical Translational Research in Transplant Nephrology
The purpose of this program is to expand training and mentoring opportunities in the UW Nephrology Section through patient-oriented clinical translational and mechanistic studies. Role: Consultant

Women's Health and Aging: Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award
The intent of this Program is to develop a cadre of researchers in the area of women's health and aging who are excellent scientists imbued with an interdisciplinary perspective, effective communicators, and managers of independent research programs. Role: Curriculum Coordinator & Member of the Advisory Committee

ACRN - Clinical Research Skills Development Core
The goal of the Clinical Research Skills Development Core is to provide junior clinical investigators with limited research experience the opportunity to acquire and develop research skills that will enable them to progress into independently funded investigators. This training core augments an ACRN proposal entitled, "Treatment of Severe Persistent Asthma" Role: Training Director
