Angela Byars-Winston is a Visiting Associate Professor in the University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine. Her research interests include the examination of cultural influences on career development, especially for racial and ethnic minorities and women in the sciences, engineering, and medicine. Specifically, she has focused on testing the validity of theoretical models to explain and predict academic and career outcomes using social cognitive theoretical approaches.

In 2010, Dr. Byars-Winston was awarded a multi-year R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health as Principal Investigator to measure and test critical factors in research training interventions for mentors of ethnically diverse mentees in biological science. She recently completed a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation as Principal Investigator aimed at improving the retention of racial and ethnic minority undergraduates in life sciences and engineering programs at UW-Madison.

Dr. Byars-Winston completed a predoctoral clinical internship at the University of Maryland, College Park and received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Arizona State University. She was a KL2 scholar at ICTR in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and is a Researcher in the UW Center for Women's Health Research. Dr. Byars-Winston enjoys spending time with family and traveling, outdoor activities, and reading novels by J. California Cooper and Stephen Carter.
