Clinical and Research Interests
Dr. Mathur is board certified in Allergy and Immunology and sees patients in the Allergy and Immunology Clinic at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. Clinical interests include Asthma, Hypereosinophilic Syndromes (including Eosinophilic Esophagitis), and Chronic Urticaria.
Eosinophil immunoregulatory activity. Dr. Mathur is studying in vitro co-cultures of human peripheral blood eosinophils and epithelial cells to determine whether eosinophils can regulate epithelial responses to innate immune stimuli and viruses. This project is supported by a Pilot Award from the University of Wisconsin Institute for Clinical and Translational Research and an NIH Program Project Grant to study the Role of Eosinophils in Airway Inflammation and Remodeling (PI: Dr. Nizar Jarjour).
Asthma in the elderly. As one ages, it has been shown that immune cell functions can change, often with a decrease in functional activity, which is termed "immunosenescence". Dr. Mathur is recruiting older and younger asthma subjects to determine whether this immunosenescence influences airway inflammation, the clinical presentation of asthma, and the therapeutic implications for the elderly asthma patient. This project is supported by a Hartford Center of Excellence Scholar Award (PI; Dr. Sanjay Asthana).
