Biography
George Wilding, MD, graduated from the University of Massachusetts Medical School where he also completed his training in Internal Medicine. He underwent training in Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute.Dr. Wilding is the Donald and Marilyn Anderson Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center. He joined the UW School of Medicine and Public Health faculty in 1988 to focus on the development of new cancer therapies, particularly aimed at advanced prostate cancer. He is currently the principal investigator on grants funded by the National Cancer Institute, Department of Defense, private foundations, such as CaPCURE, and the pharmaceutical industry. His research teams are conducting studies in the laboratory and clinic aimed at developing and testing new cancer treatments. New therapies targeting angiogenesis, cell signaling, differentiation and gene therapy are now being tested. All of these areas of investigation are tightly linked to laboratory research groups to provide a strong basic science foundation for translational research. For example, Dr. Wilding's Experimental Therapeutics Program was awarded one of the first trials of the angiogenesis inhibitor, endostatin. This trial brought together a large multidisciplinary team of researchers from Radiology, Pharmacy, Zoology, Medical Oncology and Pathology to conduct a highly published clinical trial in a very exciting area of cancer research. UW's trial has subsequently been highlighted on the PBS science series, NOVA.
Dr. Wilding is currently the Head of the Medical Oncology Section in the Department of Medicine. In the UW Comprehensive Cancer Center, he serves as the Associate Director for Clinical Research and Director for the Experimental Therapeutics Program.
