Dr. Richard Weindruch is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin and an investigator with the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center at the VA Hospital in Madison. He earned his BS and MS in Biology at the University of Illinois (Urbana) and his PhD (1978) in Experimental Pathology at UCLA under the direction of Dr. Roy Walford. For more than 25 years, he has studied caloric restriction, which is known to slow the aging process in experimental animals. Dr. Weindruch's laboratory is investigating three main questions:

  1. How does CR retard aging and diseases in mice and rats?
  2. Does CR retard aging in monkeys?
  3. Can substances which mimic CR's actions be discovered?
The answers to these questions may lead to increases in the normal span of good human health.

Dr. Weindruch is the author of two books, more than 75 peer-reviewed research reports and 55 review articles. He has received several awards for his research including the Gerontological Society of America's Kleemeir Award (1998), the Glenn Foundation Award (2000) and the National Institute on Aging's Nathan Shock Award (2000). From 1994 to 1999 he served as Chairman of NIH's Geriatrics and Rehabilitation Medicine Study Section.
