Third Year Medicine Clerkship Core Competencies
Students should have a good understanding of the clinical features of these conditions. They should have a basic understanding of their initial evaluation and treatment. These topics and skills are assessed in the YEPSA- the clinical skills examination given at the end of year 3, which all students must pass in order to graduate.
- Sepsis
- Pneumonia
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Congestive heart failure
- Acute abdominal pain including diarrhea and constipation
- Diabetes
- Asthma
- Common dermatologic disorders
Students should also be able to perform physical examination skills relevant to Internal Medicine
Student ward responsibilities
- Complete 8 full patient histories and physicals
- Follow 3-5 patients at a time
- Pre-round
- Present on work rounds
- Present on attending rounds
- Write daily progress notes
- Write orders with assistance of housestaff
- Read about patients' illnesses
- Be reliable
- Take appropriate initiative
- Act professionally
Resident responsibilities
- Be a role model of professionalism
- Let students work up new patients first if possible
- Demonstrate physical findings and encourage questions on work rounds
- Help students polish their presentations
- Help students write orders on their patients
- Give a short talk weekly
- Include students in interesting events and procedures
- Give feedback on an on-going basis
- Evaluate the student's performance with the attending
- Discuss any problems with the student and attending
