MATEC Midwest AIDS Training + Education Center The Midwest

 

Overview

The Midwest AIDS Training & Education Center is a federally-funded center providing HIV and AIDS training to health care professionals. Our mission is to increase the number of health care providers who are effectively educated and motivated to prevent, diagnose, treat and manage HIV infection.

The regional headquarters site for the Midwest AIDS Training & Education Center (MATEC) is located at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Jane Addams College of Social Work. MATEC serves a 7-state region that includes Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Site of MATEC (MATEC-WI) is based at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Medicine in Madison, Wisconsin. We focus on education and training for health care providers in Wisconsin, with a focus on:

  • Physicians
  • Nurses
  • Advanced Practice Nurses
  • Physician Assistants
  • Dentists
  • Dental health professionals
  • Pharmacists
  • Other health care professionals.

Education is provided through workshops, lectures, hands-on supervised clinical training, case conferences, and specialty conferences. Medical faculty provide case consultation in person, via telephone, or by e-mail.

MATEC recognizes that the HIV/AIDS epidemic is growing among traditionally underserved and hard-to-reach populations. Special emphasis is placed on training Ryan White CARE Act funded providers and health care providers serving minority and underserved populations that are affected disproportionately by HIV. These include:

  • Community, Migrant and Tribal Health Centers
  • Public Health Clinics
  • Urban and Rural Hospitals
  • AIDS service organizations
  • Correctional Facilities
  • Other Nonprofit Organizations.

MATEC is one of eleven regional AIDS Education and Training Centers (AETCs). The AETC Program supports a national network of centers that conduct clinical HIV education and training programs in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The AETC Program is funded through the Ryan White CARE Act and administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), HIV/AIDS Bureau, Division of Training and Technical Assistance.
