Welcome to the Infectious Disease Section at the University of Wisconsin

The Infectious Disease Section of the Department of Internal Medicine engages in a broad range of patient care, research, and educational activities. The Section is comprised of 13 full-time faculty and numerous close associations with other clinical and basic science departments.

Patient care and consultation is provided for hospitalized and ambulatory adult patients with every variety of infectious disease. Faculty members are board certified in infectious diseases. Specialized services are offered in a variety of areas such as transplant infectious diseases, critical care and surgical infectious diseases, HIV, Hepatitis C, home IV antibiotic infusion, mycology, and travel medicine.

Research programs within the Infectious Disease Section include studies ranging from clinical to basic pathogenesis. Specific faculty areas of research include healthcare epidemiology, nosocomial infections, sepsis, device related infections, antibiotic resistance, antimicrobial pharmacodynamics and drug development, clinical and basic mycology, hepatitis C, Staphylococcal pathogenesis, microbial biofilms, transplant infections and antimicrobial utilization. A strong affililation with Medical Microbiology and numerous other basic science departments on the UW campus provide limitless opportunities ranging from basic microbial pathogenesis to population health. Our research programs are primarily supported by NIH, CDC, and numerous research foundation awards, as well as grants from biomedical and the pharmaceutical industry.
