Fellowship applications will be accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All applications must be received at ERAS by January 1. |
The postgraduate training program in oncology usually begins after three years of an approved internal medicine residency. It is a three-year program designed to provide an intense educational experience in the clinical practice of cancer medicine as well as exposure to and involvement in clinical and laboratory-based cancer research. Trainees will be eligible for sub-specialty boards in Medical Oncology after two years of training. A third year committed to a focused area of research is encouraged.
The initial 12 months are devoted to managing inpatients and outpatients with a diverse spectrum of neoplastic disease. Elective clinical rotations are offered including radiotherapy, surgical pathology, pediatric oncology, hematology and bone marrow transplantation. On the inpatient oncology services, trainees are responsible for patient management working with house staff from the Department of Medicine. Outpatient activities include regular responsibilities for a group of patients - a responsibility which continues throughout the periods of fellowship. An active consultation service involves both UW Hospital and Clinics and the VA Hospital.
After the first year, the program for each trainee is individualized to meet personal career goals. Active clinical research programs in cancer prevention, breast and genitourinary cancers, biologic response modifiers and experimental therapeutics exist; basic laboratory programs in carcinogenesis, colon cancer biology, drug resistance and radiobiology are also available. Opportunities are available for additional and more specialized clinical experiences, clinical protocol research and basic laboratory research. Additional years of training may be needed for research careers.
