The Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Section has a dynamic academic program providing state-of-the-art clinical care and teaching as well as conducting cutting edge research in a broad spectrum of disciplines.
Clinical Services are offered in an in- and out-patient setting for a large variety of endocrine disorders including diabetes, thyroid disorders, metabolic bone disease and osteoporosis, pituitary and adrenal problems and endocrine tumors. Members of the section have broad-based clinical expertise and work closely with other departments such as Surgery, Nuclear Medicine or Pathology providing a multidisciplinary comprehensive approach to patient care.
The Section also has a strong teaching mission and provides a well-balanced ACGME accredited Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship Program. It is designed to provide fellows who strive for excellence in clinical and academic endocrinology the necessary hands-on experience as well as diverse research opportunities to prepare them for their scientific careers.
In addition, members of the section are heavily involved in the medical student curriculum and opportunities for rotations or electives are available to medical students as well as residents.
The Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Section has a dynamic and diverse, federally funded Research Program. Major research areas in the section include diabetes and pancreatic beta cell research, bone and mineral research and endocrine cancer research. Approaches range from basic science with molecular biology, genetics and immunology to clinical research with various IRB approved protocols. Section members also have ongoing collaborations with other scientists within the School of Medicine and Public Health as well as across campus. In fact, the outstanding environment on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus with some of the top basic science departments in the nation and a diverse and vibrant scientific community is a unique asset of this program. Several section members provide training opportunities for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. In addition, the section has close interactions with the new Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) providing support for all aspects of clinically oriented research.
