Endocrinology/Diabetes Consult Service:
This service, staffed by UW faculty, endocrine fellows, medicine residents and medical students, provides adult diabetes and endocrinology consultation at UW hospital, William S. Middleton VA hospital, and Meriter hospital. Our team is available 24/7 to work with the primary service and address a variety of endocrine disorders running the spectrum of common problems, such as thyroid abnormalities, calcium and electrolyte disorders, to the more unusual conditions such as thyroid storm, hypokalemic periodic paralysis, or adrenal crisis.
Diabetes Management Service:
This service at UW hospital consisting of faculty and advanced practitioners, is responsible for directly managing blood glucose in conjunction with the primary team on a majority of adult patients requiring insulin therapy while hospitalized. This service is also available 24/7 and typically follows 35-40 patients daily, with the majority being on the different surgical services.
Outpatient Services
General Endocrinology Clinics:
Our general endocrinology clinics are based primarily at the UW West clinic with some clinics also available at the UW East clinic. Our faculty members provide consultation for diagnosis and management of adult endocrine diseases, such as thyroid diseases, adrenal disorders, disorders of calcium metabolism, metabolic bone disease, pituitary diseases, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and other rare endocrine disorders. The clinics are staffed by faculty, fellows, medicine residents, medical students and specialized endocrine nurses and advanced practitioners. We are the major referral center for South-Central Wisconsin and see over 3000 patients annually. We work closely with our colleagues in Nuclear Medicine, Endocrine Surgery, Radiology, Cytopathology, and Neurosurgery to provide efficient, comprehensive, integrated care for adult endocrine disorders.
Clinical Diabetes Center:
The Clinical Diabetes Center offers a multidisciplinary clinic located at UW West clinic providing comprehensive care for adults with diabetes mellitus. The clinic consists of physicians, advanced practitioners, certified diabetes educators, dietitians, social worker, and pharmacists. We provide consultation, diagnosis and on-going care for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes as well as secondary forms of diabetes and diabetes complications. The clinic has an ADA-recognized education program, providing group education classes as well as individualized care. We see over 3000 patients annually, of which approximately 60% have type 1 diabetes, and the remainder has type 2 or secondary diabetes (primarily post-transplant and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes). We have the largest insulin pump program in our region and provide state-of-the-art continuous glucose monitoring. There is also ongoing active clinical research studying new treatments and devices for diabetes.
Osteoporosis/Metabolic Bone disease Clinic:
Located at UW West clinic this multidisciplinary program provides diagnosis and management of osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases. The clinic is staffed by faculty from Endocrinology, Geriatrics, and Rheumatology. The team also includes advanced practitioners, specialized nurses, a physical therapist and psychologist to provide the necessary education and specialized therapy (such as infusions of zolendronic acid) for the patients. In addition, a bone densitometer is located in the clinic and most faculty are certified BMD readers allowing patients to get complete care during their clinic visit.
Multidisciplinary Pituitary Clinic:
This clinic, located at the UW Hospital, provides comprehensive, integrated services for diagnosis and management of pituitary tumors. Faculty from Endocrinology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, and Neuroradiology provide joint services to address the different aspects of managing pituitary tumors and give patients the opportunity to be seen by different specialists in one clinic visit.
Multidisciplinary Thyroid FNA Clinic:
Located at the UW Hospital, this multidisciplinary clinic includes Endocrinologists, Cytopathologists and Surgeons and provides the opportunity for patients with thyroid nodules to be evaluated with a neck ultrasound, fine needle aspiration (FNA) of any thyroid nodules if indicated for cancer screening, obtain cytological analysis of the biopsy material and bee seen by a Surgeon if needed.
