The William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital (VA) is physically connected to University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (UWHC) and provides full cardiovascular inpatient and outpatient services. It has a separate cardiac surgery program and is the VA's Midwest regional referral center for heart failure and heart transplantation care, receiving referrals from as far as New York and the Dakotas.

Cardiovascular Medicine faculty at the VA Hospital hold joint appointments in the UW School of medicine and Public Health's Section of Cardiovascular Medicine and at the VA Hospital. They contribute to fully integrated University and VA teaching programs for medical students and residents, and to UW fellows' training in cardiovascular diseases.

The VA Hospital offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient clinical programs for people with cardiovascular disease. State-of- the-art facilities include a well equipped Coronary Care Unit; a completely digital cardiac catheterization laboratory; recently re-equipped echocardiography and nuclear cardiology laboratories; an exercise treadmill, cardiac rehabilitation, clinical research areas; new echo-physiology lab and new ambulatory care areas.

A telecardiology system links the VA Hospital with several community-based outreach clinics, including the Rockford, Illinois facility, and other VA medical centers within the VA Regional Network (VISN). Additional clinical programs are offered for permanent pacemaker and cardiac defibrillator implantations and clinical cardiac electrophysiology studies, including ablation procedures. The VA Hospital has its own cardiac surgery and cardiac transplantation program and the faculty work closely with the cardiothoracic surgeons and members of the cardiac transplant team.
