Department of Medicine
University of Wisconsin
Graduate Students and Post-doctoral Fellows
In addition to providing research training for medical students, residents and fellows, the research programs of the Cardiovascular Medicine Division make significant contributions to graduate student education and post-doctoral training at the University of Wisconsin.
Cardiovascular Medicine faculty lecture in several graduate school courses and assist in training graduate students in their laboratories. Seven faculty have affiliate appointments in basic science departments (five in Physiology, one each in Pharmacology, Radiology, and Medical Physics) allowing them to be primary trainers and advisers of graduate students. Faculty also participate in multidisciplinary graduate training programs such as Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Medical Physics and in the MD/PhD program.
In conjunction with the University of Wisconsin Cardiovascular Research Center, the Cardiovascular Medicine Division funds graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, as well as training in basic and clinical research for clinical fellows. A National Institutes of Health institutional training grant (T32) in translational cardiovascular science supports both pre and postdoctoral trainees performing clinical and basic research. Cardiovascular Medicine faculty serve as primary mentors, trainers and thesis advisers for a number of graduate students in their laboratories. Other graduate students receive a substantial part of their research training in Cardiovascular Medicine laboratories. In addition to graduate student positions, post-doctoral training positions are plentiful in the basic Cardiovascular Medicine faculty laboratories.
