The Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Wisconsin is a fully funded, four-year training period designed to provide trainees with strong clinical skills in all areas of cardiovascular medicine and to offer a significant research experience. Approximately one quarter of the four-year training period is devoted to research.

Rotations on clinical services last for one or two months. During these months, participants have few other commitments, providing an intensive and focused learning experience. Faculty supervise and work closely with fellows on a daily basis during these rotations, helping structure the rotation to meet each fellow's needs and interests. Fellows are evaluated at the end of their rotations and offer anonymous feedback on faculty performance. This paradigm minimizes misunderstandings and conflict between fellows and faculty, and fosters a strong, mutually respectful collegial relationship.

One of the main components of the program is flexibility. Rotations and research are arranged to accommodate the unique needs of each individual. Fellows anticipating an academic career have ample opportunity to interact with clinical and basic research faculty in Cardiovascular Medicine and collaborate with other departments on campus. UW Hospital offers a biostatistics course, and fellows subspecializing in nuclear medicine take radiation physics courses as part of their training.

Graduates of the program are trained to competently practice in a subspecialty area of their choosing and, if desired, make research contributions in their area. Those selecting an academic career are conversant with the literature and important research questions in their field, and begin contributing to it by the end of the program.

Research training in the fellowship program includes developing speaking and writing skills, guidance in hypothesis generation, study design and data analysis, in addition to performing the research itself. The experience is designed to assist trainees in launching an independent investigative career.

Current fellows in our accredited general core program have first opportunity to select a one year sub-specialty fellowship in Intervention, Electrophysiology, and Prevention. Any openings not filled will be listed with ERAS.

We will begin accepting applications for our 2010 General Cardiology Fellowship when ERAS opens on December 01, 2009. Login to ERAS to apply. Deadline for applications is January 8, 2010. Our institution is only able to accept J1 visas.
