Specific Training

The cardiac electrophysiology fellowship training is a one year program based at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, and the adjoining William S. Middleton Veterans Memorial Hospital.
All electrophysiology procedures are supervised by an EP attending. There are 3 full-time faculty members devoted to clinical electrophysiology; Dr. Douglas Kopp, Director of the Cardiac EP Fellowship Program and Dr. Cesar Alberte, Director of the Cardiac EP Laboratory. Dr. Kathleen Maginot performs pediatric electrophysiology procedures. Four basic electrophysiologists, Dr. Craig January, Dr. Tim Kamp, Dr. Jon Makielski, and Dr. Lee Eckhardt make up the Cellular Molecular Arrhythmia Research Program and are internationally known researchers. These faculty have many original articles published in peer review journals. Drs. January, Maginot, and Eckhardt also manage the inherited arrhythmia clinic.
The dedicated EP Laboratory is equipped with biplane fluoroscopy, Prucka recording system, CARTO mapping system with CARTO-Merge software, ICE, RF, and cryoablation technologies. A multipurpose laboratory is also available for implanting cardiac devices.
The clinical cardiac arrhythmia team managing the care of patients with heart rhythm disorders consists of EP faculty, EP fellow, rotating cardiology fellow, PA, and RN procedure coordinator. The electrophysiology team provides pre-operative evaluations, post-operative care, and discharge planning. There are outpatient facilities for arrhythmia evaluation and device follow-up at the East Clinic and the Clinical Science Center, staffed by 3 device clinic RNs. Devices are followed remotely as well, using Care Link, Latitude, and Merlininet systems. Over 1000 patients with implanted devices are followed by the arrhythmia device clinics at these centers.
Formal didactic sessions, journal clubs, and research conferences are held on a regular basis. In addition, there are weekly ECG conferences during which the electrophysiology fellow and general cardiology fellows participate in the interpretation of complex electrocardiograms under the guidance and supervision of cardiology faculty.
The fellows are mentored and supervised by faculty members in the conduct of clinical and basic research. Fellows are encouraged and supported in enhancing their scholarly activities through publication of manuscripts or abstracts in peer-reviewed journals and/or abstracts presented at national specialty meetings such as the Heart Rhythm Society, ACC, and AHA meetings.
