The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery offers services ranging from expertise in general thoracic, esophageal and cardiovascular problems to in-depth coverage of general adult and pediatric cardiac and transplant surgery; surgery for complex aortic problems, including dissections and arch aneurysms; congenital heart surgery; and surgery on trauma patients. Experienced surgeons comprise the core of the program, which features the heart and lung transplantation service, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), integrated laboratory facilities and multiple programs, such as electrophysiologic surgery, which link Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiac Surgery.
Research projects involve the study of single cell function, valvular morphology, remodeling and repair techniques, preservation of hearts for cardiac transplantation, the function of various pumps for left ventricular assist, and immunosuppressive drug therapy to prevent rejection following heart transplantation.
The division has all the appropriate equipment for performing special procedures unique to a tertiary care hospital, such as conduits and aortic surgery. Available equipment includes left ventricular assist devices and ECMO apparatus, including Biomedicus pump, SciMed long and oral intubation equipment for esophageal prosthesis. Thorascopic surgery, including lung resection, is also available.
