Basic ultrasound research is centered in the Medical Physics department and is led by the department chair, James A. Zagzebski, PhD. Areas of active interest include:

• laboratory measurement and verification of ultrasound contrast agent characteristics
• computer modeling of ultrasound signals from contrast agents
• image analysis procedures for determining tissue attention, backscatter and texture from ultrasound signals
• radiofrequency echo signal analysis of backscatter coefficients, ultrasound attenuation and parametric images of scatterer sizes to determine tissue characteristics
• three-dimensional ultrasound acquisition and display
• development, testing and application of elastography to the assessment of LV function
