Educational Activities
Several conferences occur on a regular basis (weekly or monthly) to provide the fellows with core knowledge of allergic and immunodeficiency diseases and the latest in clinical and basic science research findings are discussed. Each of these conferences is listed below along with its specific objective.
- Allergy Grand Rounds. Core topics are presented by the faculty, fellows, and invited speakers to address educational needs of the fellows and the training program. Topics relate to the practice of allergy and related clinical and bench research. Weekly from September through May.
- Allergy Journal Club. Review and discussion of a recent journal article, presented by faculty, research scientists and fellows. Weekly from September through May.
- Allergy Research Conference. Review of current research performed at the UW Allergy Training Program, presented by research scientists and fellows. Weekly from September through May.
- Allergy and Immunology Basic Science Educational Series. Review of basic immunology and clinical allergy. Weekly from September through May.
- Core Competency Conference. Review of core curriculum topics in relation to the core competencies. Weekly, for three weeks of the month, from September through May.
- Clinical Teaching Rounds. Review of inpatient and outpatient management of interesting or difficult cases. Monthly, from September through May.
- Clinical Research Training Meeting (Protocol Orientation Meeting). Orientation to new clinical trials in Allergy and Asthma research. Monthly, year-round.
There are several short-term courses to introduce fellows to research techniques, design and data analysis. Each of these courses is listed below along with its specific objectives.
- Introduction to Laboratory Techniques. Review of diagnostic and research laboratory techniques related to Allergy and Immunology. This is a series of small group discussions with scientists and faculty with the Allergy section and some guest speakers. Weekly during July and August.
- Clinical Instructor Preparatory Program Short Course on Clinical Research. A 2-3 full day course in late summer to prepare individuals for careers in clinical research addressing topics such as research ethics, informed consent, clinical trial design, basic biostatistics, and funding opportunities.
The University of Wisconsin Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) offers educational curricula for formal training in clinical research. One option is a certificate program, the Capstone Certificate for Clinical Research. Another option is a Masters of Science (MS) in Clinical Investigation.
- Capstone Certificate for Clinical Research. This program consists of six courses in biostatistics (4), epidemiology (1), and research ethics (1) and can be completed in 2 years.
- Masters of Science (MS) in Clinical Investigation. This program consists of courses in biostatistics (4), epidemiology (1), research ethics (1), clinical/translational research (3), electives (2), and research projects (2 semesters).
